FRANCISCAN SPIRITUALITY

Reconciliation of all creation

(Christ) is the head of the body, the church;
he is the beginning, the first born from the dead,
that in everything he might be pre-eminent.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven,
making peace through the blood of his cross.
(Col. 1:18-20)

God not only created all things in, through and for Christ, but He also reconciled all things through Christ (through His death on the cross) after sin entered the world. As in the first place all creation was somehow effected by the sin of the first Adam (Gen. 3: 13-19), so too will all creation be restored through the Second Adam (1 Cor. 15: 20-22, 45). In Jesus, humanity’s image of God which was broken by sin is restored (1 Cor. 15:47-39). In fact all creation – not just humanity – is caught up in the salvation brought through Jesus Christ (Romans 8:19-23).
