A Franciscan Friar …
composer-songwriter
Joliette, 31 October 2006 – A new kind of CD will be launched in Montreal on Monday, 6 November. It is quite special that the composer-songwriter is a Franciscan — Brother Guylain Prince. His broadcast songs have sometimes been classified as "Christian Pop" or "Contemporary Christian Music". This CD presents an amazing journey through various styles and harmonies rarely explored in "spiritual music". It represents a marvelous wager that wins hands down.
Ten songs are on the CD. As the liner notes say: "Ten musical genres from ballad to gospel, from Christian pop to country blues, from Quebecois to world rhythms. Ten spiritual landscapes from evening prayer to protest songs, from hymns to songs of praise, from the deepest meditation to the most exuberant joy."
Throughout its journey of development, this CD has been carried on a wave of enthusiasm. Professional musicians have liked it. Singers of all kinds have agreed to lend their voices to the songs of the "Franciscan Friar". The well-known guitarist and producer of the album, Gino Fillion, spared no effort in providing each song with the musical accompaniment that would highlight its most inspiring words. On first hearing, the CD has enchanted listeners with its richness and beauty. Asked to comment on the contents of the CD, the former member of Beau-Dommage, composer-songwriter Robert Léger described it as "Luminous songs that forms a coherent whole in spite of the diversity of approaches."
Franciscan Guylain Prince is a communicator of exceptional talent, already well know as a lecturer and specialist in the Bible. He is a retreat leader and regularly gives sessions on the prayer of the heart (which have been issued in a box set of three CDs by the same publisher). He has also worked on setting up two websites that deal with the Bible (www.interbible.org) and Franciscan spirituality (www.ofm-canada.org). In his off-hours, he plays guitar, bass, harmonica, and various percussion instruments. He also directs the Joliette Gospel Choir, which is featured in two selections on this CD.
