Important
Writings
The
Franciscans still possess many writings of their founder Saint
Francis of Assisi. The
most important is the Rule. This document describes the Franciscan
way of life. The contours of this way of life are further outlined
in the General Constitutions. There are also important writings
that address the needs of today, such as The Vocation of the
Order Today (Assisi, 1967), The Gospel We Announce
(Bahia, 1983), and The Spirit of Prayer and Devotion (1996).
Practically
speaking, the Franciscan way of life is followed by the brothers
in diverse ways, according to the place, the time, different needs,
etc. But always the Christian faith, supported by prayer, has
top priority. The different dimensions of Franciscan life include
the contemplative life, fraternal life, a preferential option
for the poor, and evangelization. These dimensions are implicit
in the words Francis writes at the beginning of his Rule: Live
the Holy Gospel of Our Lord.
