The
Holy Land and the Missions
Since
Nov. 21, 1342, the protection of the Holy Places (places considered
holy because of their involvement with Christ) has been entrusted
to the Franciscans by the Holy See. About 400 friars over more
than six centuries have served for the Custody of the Holy Land,
at 64 friaries and 21 sanctuaries. Their work has also extended
to 40 parishes, 30 schools, 6 colleges, and 8 hostels for pilgrims.
Our province always has 4 or 5 friars in the Holy Land.
The
Missions
St. Joseph
Province of Eastern Canada has founded missions in distant countries:
China, Peru, Japan, Korea. Presently the Franciscan missionaries
are mostly in Peru (around 30, in a dozen places) and in Africa
(about 6, working for the African project, which was instigated
by the Minister General of the Order).
